Cristiano Ronaldo calls time on his international career

By Lunda Mulongo Lem’s Pierre·Staff writer·7 November 2026·5 min read

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially announced his retirement from international football, on 5 November 2026. At 41, the Portuguese forward has decided to turn the page after 23 years in the colours of the Seleção das Quinas.

His record for Portugal:

  • 234 caps (the most capped player in the history of international football);
  • 146 goals (a world record for international goals);
  • Euro 2016 winner;
  • UEFA Nations League winner (2019 and 2025);
  • Euro 2004 runner-up.
“The football superstar is now regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. At odds with the Portuguese Football Federation, he has chosen to bring his international career to an end. The decision was also widely expected, following Portugal's failure at the recent World Cup.”
